Why I Do Not Believe In Perms

Let me just start out by saying... perms are a thing of the past. I understand that at one time they were a necessary want and need. But over the years styling tools and services have gotten so good that perms are really becoming a thing of the past.

Are perms my favorite service to do, of course not. They are tedious, messy, and the smell alone is enough to put you off. But have I done my fair share, of course. I used to get them myself back in middle school before I learned that I had enough natural curl in my hair that I didn't need one. And that's the truth... you can literally train your hair to be more or less curly with out the use of harmful chemicals.

With all the ways the beauty industry has found over the years to make products safer and less harmful to the hair... perms have pretty much stayed the same. Why do you think you can't get a perm and your hair colored in the same day? You run the risk of your hair actually breaking off. And for those of you that have gotten perms... does your hair feel soft and healthy after a perm? Didn't think so.

I understand especially for some that are old school that perms will always be a necessity to them but to everyone else... learn, evolve, and keep your hair in good condition by not getting perms. There are tutorials online with styling tips, you can even watch things on youtube. Your stylist should offer you styling lessons... ask your stylist to let you bring in your own tools so they can see what you use at home. Have them show you the correct way to use them as incorrect use is usually one of the problems with re-creating your own style at home. And ask for suggestions on what products/tools to use. If your stylist is not willing to take the time to do this with you then move on. What's the point of only having that "salon" look the day you leave the salon and then never being able to do it on your own?

Nice N Easy Color Blend - Fact or Not

So lately I have really been taking note of Hair Color/Product commercials on TV and I am taking note of the ones I want to touch base on and giving you the truth. The latest one is the Clairol commercial for Nice N Easy Color Blend... it has the blonde girl Gigi from The Office in the commercial. The commercial states "Our Color Blend Technology creates a pigment-rich base with rich tones and contouring highlights. You'll get up to 8 weeks of hair color full of depth and dimension."

Fact- the only way this will work if if you are coloring hair that is "virgin" or has never been colored. And if and only if you are a mix of salt and pepper so that the color will grab differently on the light grey and the contrasting shades of your natural salt and pepper.

If you have previously colored hair and plan on using this product thinking that you will get multi-dimensional hair color it will not work. The only way to get dimensional color is to alternate light and dark colors for example: highlights and low lights. There are some talented individuals out there that can accomplish this task at home or have a friend do it but I highly recommend getting it done by a professional.

I used at home hair color for years before I knew the difference and why it really isn't usually the way to go. Ever picked out that box and really liked the color, then when you get it home it turns out fine but looks nothing like the color on the box? Me too! I could explain why but that would be lengthy and it's harder to understand if you are not used to professional hair color formulation.

Do some research, ask a professional. You can ask me on here if you like. Most Stylists in salons will do complementary consultations. And if they don't find someone that will!

My Beef with the TRESemme Color Revitalize Commercial/Ad

Ok so I'm sure many of you have seen the TRESemme commercial with the red head in the interrogation room being quizzed by "professional stylists" about how her hair color looks so good. They ask her how long ago she had her color done and she says "6 weeks." They ask her how her color can still look so fresh and vibrant after 6 weeks and she credits her TRESemme Color Revitalize Shampoo and Conditioner. And then at the end of the commercial she says that because of the use of these products she can go longer in between and her color looks as good as it did on day one and she says "it saves on my time and my picket book."

So the bottom line is... yes using some kind of shampoo and conditioners for colored hair will help prolong the life of your color but this commercial is total false advertisement. Reds are the hardest color to prevent fading in between color services. I know this for fact because I have been coloring my hair red for over 10 years. The girl in the commercial has vibrant red hair that she said she got done 6 weeks prior. Not true because if she had her color done 6 weeks prior she would have had "roots" showing her new growth.

I don't want to get long winded on this but you get what I'm telling you. Most of what they tell you in these commercials and advertisements is a bunch of crap. Don't buy into it because while you might save a buck you aren't getting what you pay for. There are plenty of affordable options that do more of what they say they will do. Yes you can prolong the life of your color but these products don't work miracles so keep your expectations realistic.
